Samarkand
To Iskanderkul Lake in Tajikistan — a Full-Day Mountain Tour from Samarkand
About this tour
Travel from Samarkand to Tajikistan and discover one of the most famous mountain lakes in Central Asia — Iskanderkul. This full-day mountain tour allows you to cross the Uzbekistan–Tajikistan border, travel through the dramatic landscapes of the Fann Mountains and reach a legendary alpine lake surrounded by rugged cliffs and spectacular mountain scenery. Early in the morning, we pick you up from your hotel in Samarkand and drive to the Uzbekistan–Tajikistan border. After completing border formalities, you cross the border on foot and continue to Penjikent, where a professional guide will meet you. From Penjikent, the route heads into the Fann Mountains towards the Iskanderkul Valley. The journey to the lake is an experience in itself. The road passes through mountain valleys, highland landscapes and small settlements before gradually climbing deeper into the Fann Mountains. As you approach Iskanderkul, dramatic views of rocky slopes, deep gorges and remote mountain scenery unfold around you. Located at approximately 2,195 meters above sea level, Iskanderkul is considered one of Tajikistan’s most beautiful mountain lakes. According to local legend, the lake is connected with Alexander the Great, known in the region as Iskander Zulkarnain. Enjoy a walk along the lakeshore, take photographs and experience the peaceful atmosphere of the high mountains. During your visit, there is also an opportunity to walk to the famous Iskanderkul Waterfall, located close to the lake. The trail passes through a scenic mountain gorge and leads to a waterfall often known locally as the “Fann Niagara.” It is one of the most impressive natural highlights of the area. After exploring Iskanderkul and its surrounding mountains, return towards Penjikent. From there, cross the border on foot again and continue back to Samarkand. This tour is ideal for travelers who have already explored historic Samarkand and want to add the mountains of Tajikistan, the Fann Mountains, Iskanderkul Lake, dramatic gorges and alpine landscapes to their Uzbekistan journey. It is a memorable way to experience a completely different side of Central Asia in a single day.
